The sweet – bitter memories
Carry back to the golden age
To see that black is beautiful
And tears are rain drops of love;
The light and darkness meet
Like the Bamboo carpet
It in torn and mended,
Like the old house is renovated
Or the broken ceiling is mended
The wrinkled face could be painted
Everything is easily mended;
But this heart is like a mirror
That once broken is broken forever
It cannot be mended again
Oh conservative Heart !

- भाषांतरण - ह्रदय
वह मीठी–खट्टी यादें
स्वर्ण–युग में ले चलती हैं
यह देखने कि श्याम सुंदर है
और अश्रु प्रेम की बारिश की बूंदे हैं;
प्रकाश और अंधकार का मिलन होता है
एक बाँस की दरी जैसे
वह फटती है और पैबंद पड़ता है,
जैसे पुराना घर नवीनीकृत होता है
या टूटी छत की मरम्मत होती है
झुर्रियों वाला चेहरा समाया जाता है
सबकी मरम्मत सरलतापूर्वक होती है
किंतु यह हृदय एक दर्पण की भाँति है
जो एक बार टूटा सो सदा के लिए टूटा
उसे पुन: जोड़ा नहीं जा सकता
आह ! अनुदार हृदय !

They say he is strong
That he has twelve powers,
They say she is week
That she has one power,
This is what they say
But how far is this true?
As I see fear in him
That she may over rule;
They may say gender determines everything
It could be just the opposite
Gender determines nothing
Here lies the truth of him and her.

- भाषांतरण - लिंग की सच्चाई
वे कहते हैं वह (पुरूष) बलवान है
कि उसकी बारह शक्तियाँ हैं,
वे कहते हैं वह (स्त्री) कमजोर है
कि उसकी एक शक्ति है,
वे यही कहते हैं
किंतु इसमें कितनी सच्चाई है ?
मैं उसमें (पुरूष में) एक भय देखती हूँ
कि कहीं वह (स्त्री) उस पर शासन न करे;
वे कह सकते हैं-
लिंग सब कुछ निर्धारित करता है
यह उसके विपरीत भी हो सकता है
लिंग कुछ भी निर्धारित नहीं करता
यहाँ पुल्लिंग और स्त्रीलिंग की सच्चाई टिकी रहती है।
